About Boomkwekerij A en E Maaijen
Unique tree nursery in the garden of Europe
Tree nursery A & E Maaijen was founded in the early 1980s in the Krimpenerwaard near Stolwijk by Arie Maaijen. The business started in the family's vegetable garden, but soon a piece of land was bought. In the early years, Arie Maaijen mainly grew trees for the construction of municipal parks. The range was soon adapted and enriched with new tree species. Due to circumstances, the company moved in 1997/1998 to its current location at Halve Raak 35 in Boskoop, the only remaining location of the nursery. At this new location, Arie Maaijen took the big step towards specializing his breeding. This was the result of the fact that the company had ended up in the heart of Dutch tree cultivation and floriculture with its move to Boskoop. Boskoop is also known as the garden of Europe. At its current location, A & E Maaijen has larger greenhouses and more opportunities to experiment. This allowed the company to work on a vision for the future. In 2007 Erwin Maaijen joined the company as a co-partner. Due to the increasing demand from customers for certain tree species, Boomkwekerij A & E Maaijen was forced to expand in 2008. In that year, the company was therefore expanded by 1.7 hectares at Halve Raak 54. This means that Boomkwekerij A & E Maaijen currently has 3.2 hectares of company surface. 2.5 hectares of this covers open ground and 0.3 hectares in the potted corner. The remaining space has been built up with the shed, glass greenhouse and foil greenhouses. This expansion allowed the cultivation to be further adapted and specialized. The necessary investments have also been made in terms of technology. For example, the roller tables are now heated by electric ground heat, upgraded with an HPC unit and a computer-controlled greenhouse.

Who are we?
Arie Maaijen
Arie Maaijen (57) is the founder of Tree Nursery A & E Maaijen. He is the son of a contractor/carpenter. After graduating from secondary school in horticulture, he worked for several years as an intern and gardener for various growers. In the early 1980s he decided to start his own tree nursery. Until 2007, Arie Maaijen ran the company alone. Son Erwin joined the company in 2007.
Erwin Maaijen
Erwin Maaijen (30) started working as an employee at Boomkwekerij A & E Maaijen in 2007. Since 2008 he has become a co-partner and successor to the company. Erwin Maaijen has successfully completed an assistant electrician training at primary technical school.
